FAQs

Q: What is a hate incident?

A: Hate incidents include any acts of hostility or violence, physical or verbal, motivated by bias against race or ethnicity, national origin, religion, gender identity, sexuality, or disability. One example of bias would be assuming that an AAPI individual is infected with COVID-19, or that person’s ethnic group is responsible for creating or spreading COVID-19. Learn more here.

Q: Why should I report a hate incident, and how will my submission be used?

A: Even if you are not 100% sure that the incident you experienced was motivated by one of the biases listed above, filing a report using the form above will allow us to fight for the civil rights of all AAPIs and potentially connect you with local counseling resources.

Q: Will my privacy be impacted?

A: There are several demographic questions on the reporting form. However, there is no obligation for you to disclose your name, gender identity, ethnicity, or contact information at any step in the process. Any information you do provide will be used to study and stop hate incidents from occurring—nothing more.

A few additional notes:

  • We will never share your personal identifying information without your explicit permission.

  • Your submission and any information collected by OCA will not be shared with law enforcement.

  • With your consent, volunteer researchers may use your report to study hate incident trends over time. Your submission can also help provide OCA with data to determine what resources are necessary and to advocate accordingly.

Q: Who can I contact if I have more questions?

A: Email OCA National Center’s Associate Manager of Policy & Advocacy Michael Nguyen: michael.nguyen@ocanational.org.
